Beads For Life - Understanding Global Poverty

I haven't posted much recently about this great organization, but that does not mean I've stopped supporting them and that they are not making continuous strives. Beads for Life is a non for profit organization eradicating poverty one bead at a time in Uganda, through the sale of beautiful beads and jewelry.

Beads For Life has just announced their Understanding Global Poverty Curriculum on how Youth can make a difference. It's an experimental service-learning curriculum for grades 6-12. The goal of the program is to ensure that our next generation are informed citizens and that they are empowered to help alleviate poverty around the world. Beads for life is encouraging youth leaders to bring this curriculum to their faith based youth groups, scouts, schools, etc.

To find out more about this wonderful opportunity you can visit the Beads for Life Blog. There you'll find more details about the program and how you can get involved. Also follow their blog and receive up to date information about how this group is making positive changes in the world.

BeadCircle Announcement

As you know, I am a supporter of Beads for Life, that makes me a part of their BeadCircle, which I am proud to be recognized as. I received an email today from their organization announcing the following:

"Tomorrow (May 6) BeadforLife will be covered by the Today Show - the highest-rated morning news and talk show in America over the last decade. The show will feature the extraordinary work of BeadforLife, our poverty eradication organization working in Uganda. Over five million viewers will see how BeadforLife has created a network of women in Uganda and throughout North America and beyond to work together to eradicate extreme poverty.

If you are already a part of the BeadCircle I hope that you will take pride in Beadforlife's work by watching the show. If you're interested in one of these Kaledescope bracelets where 50% of the proceeds will go back to the BeadforLife project, please contact me directly, I only have a couple more remaining.

Runako Designs - Help Me Fight Poverty

"1.2 billion people around the world - one out of every five people alive - struggle to survive on less than $1 a day"...

Several posts ago, I told you I was trying to come up with a way to raise some money to donate to Beads for Life. When I posted the photo of the bracelet I had made for myself, I never thought that would be my initial start; however, I almost sold that one straight off my arm! Instead, I offered to make two more to sell to the customer as I was pretty fond of the clasp I had used. I also got another neat idea from a friend, that I'll be trying with my next purchase of beads, but for now, I have 10 more bracelets that need a new home:

Kaleidoscope of Life

I call this the Kaleidoscope of Life bracelet. It sales for $25.00 + shipping, made using recycled paper beads by a group of women in Uganda. 50% of the proceeds from the sale of this bracelet will go to Bead for Life, a non-profit organization that supports community development projects in health, education, employment, and housing to the impoverished in Uganda. Other components include a Silver Hill Tribe accent bead and clasp from Thailand, another Fair Trade favorite and glass spacer beads. This bracelet is more beautiful in person, because of the wonderful colors. I get compliments every time I've worn it. Each bracelet comes with a pamphlet that tells the story behind Beads for Life, so that you can share with others.

If you are interested in purchasing one of these exclusive bracelets, please email me directly at dgordon@runakojewelry.com with your request.
