Wake Up The World...Fair Trade Awareness

http://www.wftday.org/
Today marks the first of 14, of a Fair Trade Movement to get 100,000 people in North American to take a Fair Trade coffee break on May 13 or May 14th.  Fair Trade Day is officially May 14th and in an effort to support the cause (which I'm passionate about anyway), I'll be posting information to promote Fair Trade purchases and educate my readers at the same time.

The Theme this year of the Fair Trade Resource Network is "Wake Up the World".  Every year As Americans, we lavish in a multitude of inexpensive goods, while 1.7 million people die for lack of clean water and basic sanitation.  If we could just redirect some of our purchasing power towards Fair Trade products, whether it be weekly grocery shopping or during just a few of the many holiday's we celebrate all year, imagine what our dollars could to do help others in developing countries who are trying to help themselves - educate their families, obtain food, housing and medical care; and gain skills in marketing, product development and finance.

"Supporting Fair Trade isn't about just giving to another charity, its about empowering others to help themselves."

Over the next 14 days, I will be sharing with you why I purchase and support Fair Trade, and hopefully encourage you to think about doing the same.  I will educate you on what I know, share with you some of my favorite retailers and products and hopefully encourage you to do the same and pass the word along.

It would really get me excited if you would leave comments, and share your experiences with fair trade as you read the posts over the next weeks, for others to read.  If you get encouraged along the way to join the bandwagon, I'd love to hear about that as well....Grand things could happen on May 14th,  if Dee gets excited! * hint, hint*

It's time to raise our voices and vote with our dollars until all trade is fair!

Thank you for posting this. I will share it on Twitter and FB. I have purchased beads from Beads For Life & we have a cool shop in town that only carries Fair Trade items. I like to shop there, but should do so more often.

Wow, what a great post! You know, I'm really looking forward to being educated about fair trade because aside from the face value of the process, I don't know much >.<

Thank you for posting about this subject. I aim to follow your posts and learn more about it. I want to particularly know that what I do over here will really make a difference and not just help line some politicians pockets or end up with a corrupt bureaucrat. I must admit I know little about the details of fair trade and I am cynical and I will keep an open mind and follow your series.

Thanks Kayla!

Regina,
I hope that my series helps you to become better informed. Even if Fair Trade isn't for you, you should at least be more informed to express your reasons why.
